These innovations reduce fabrication time, minimize patient discomfort during impressions, and ensure better space maintenance over six months of use.

 

The device's primary role remains unchanged: preventing adjacent teeth from shifting into gaps caused by lost baby teeth or extractions, thereby safeguarding future dental alignment and reducing reliance on complex orthodontic interventions. However, modern retainers now come in diverse forms. Fixed options like lingual retainers provide long-term stability, while removable clear aligners or Hawley retainers prioritize aesthetics and ease of cleaning, though they require strict daily wear (12–20 hours) to remain effective.

 

A 2025 systematic review highlights that fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) retainers are increasingly preferred for their aesthetic appeal and comparable efficacy to metal alternatives.
